A new sailing movie AND it has Robert Redford in it?
« on: August 06, 2013, 09:29:14 PM »
Alert the media! This might actually be good - coming out in October. It won't have to be very good to beat the pants off "Wind," my current nominee for Worst Movie of All Time.

Inquiring minds want to know - why is he calling "SOS" instead of "mayday"?

That actually looks good. Mr. Redford has indeed proved over the years his greatness as an actor. I notice his boat is not a Compac....

Looks like it could be a good one, as long as it isnt full of the agonizing parts like Dead Calm.  I wouldnt call Wind the worst, I like that, and I love my Womper!  Id say the worst movie featuring a sailboat would be Waterworld, Thats a slick tri though.  A long time ago I read that there were two boats, one that sailed and one that was a movie prop for the slick looking stuff like the telescopic boom.  Anybody know where those boats went?    From the stern shot in the trailer the boat looks like a Cal 35 possibly, very roomy down below.   The way the hole was worn through is a bit far fetched for something to happen at sea.  When I lived on board the slightest sound that was wrong could wake one up instantly, especially that time the bilge pump kicked on.  That was only a cracked fresh water fitting.  The movie does hint at one of my personal biggest fears when out away from land and that is hitting a container, thousands of those things get washed off ships every year.
Hollywood does need better consultants, where was Morgan Freeman while it was being made?  I wonder if he still has his Shannon 43.   Check out how the sailboat tacks are done in Failure to launch,,,

Yes "Wind" is a lousy movie, but B and I watch 2 or 3 times each Wisconsin winter.  The sailing scenes alone make it a relief from bitter cold temps and snow.

"Dove" on VHS is really dated, but we also watch it.
"Morning Light" is a good documentary style sailing movie.

Just got some old John Wayne classics, "The Wild Wind" and "The Wake of the Red Witch" from the library.  We'll see what they are like.

Koinonia,

I just returned from a conference in San Diego.  I stayed at the Sheraton Marina.  One night, I couldn't take looking at the sailboats any longer and found a 'romantic sunset sail' (for just me!).  We were on a fully restored and beautiful 1967 Cal Jenson 36.  I was the only 'passenger' and the skipper and first mate let me take the helm for most of the trip and even through tacks.  My point is, as we were sailing the skipper pointed to some nearby docks and said 'see that Cat....it was used in Waterworld".  I wasn't able to get a picture but it was tied up at the docks and looked very sea worthy.  So one of them is in San Diego Bay.

I found the release date for 'All is Lost'. 18 Oct.  I'm definitely going to watch it and hope that never happens to me

My husband and I saw "All Is Lost" on Friday, and it was pretty gripping!  There's a lot about sailing in it, but also about the human spirit responding to adversity.  We should all hope we would do as well as the lone sailor in this movie.

I watched it this past weekend as well. It was worth seeing. Really good but a little tense at times.

Can't believe Redford is 77 years old. He was great in the movie.

Well, I just finished watching this movie.  Now I'm not one to criticize generally, but who in the hell throws the sea anchor over the stern in 20 foot waves?

Or goes on deck in a storm w/o tethering, or goes aloft to reattach an antenna when your radio has no juice?  Or has no EPIRB (what was in use at the time) unit on the ones life jacket (or doesn't wear it in a storm) or on the life raft .  Or lets the seawater flow continuously over the electronics, or doesn't start the bilge pump first to help prevent flooding of his auxilliary engine).

I know a life raft is very small compared to  a container vessel, but a yellow 10 ft diameter life raft would probably have been seen if one was within 500 feet of the vessel by the bow watch.  Oooh! the emergency beacon would have helped there!

Interesting you would bring up this movie.  I played it on the sailing club bus ride back to Madison from Strictly Sail in Chicago.

Another great movie is the original Treasure Island with Wallace Beery.

Any of yawl watching Black Sails on Starz? I have been enjoying it; it's a sort of prequel to Treasure Island.
