It has been years but recall a book and movie "The Riddle of the Sands". As I recall an interesting plot set on the background of a small sailing vessel.

Matt:
I have the book but haven't seen the movie. Great book set in England during WW2, I think. Been a while since I read it

I agree Bob.  Enjoyed Erskine Childer's book too.

We do need a book/DVD/VHS exchange on this site.  I have a big ol' box of sailing books that I will never read again in the basement.  Maybe we could create a sticky topic for members to list books they are willing to loan or give away.  Hmmm, maybe I'll drag that box up and offer them to anyone who wants them for the cost of shipping.  How about we all send every book and tape we have to Bob's house and he could be our librarian?

Hold on thar, partner! I also have a large collection...some of mine...some from my father in law. I have some old Rudder magazines as well. An exchange is an interesting idea...sort of a CPYOA library- oh: you already had that idea.
It might be fun to list our collections...wouldn't take that long and it would force me to organize them.
I'm in the process of moving my office from a small bedroom in our house to a larger one and I learned something: I am a boat magazine hoarder! I unearthed large caches of Messing About in Boats, Woodenboat, SCA, GOB, and and old and extinct favorite: "open water rowing". Can someone help me with my problem????? :(

And who goes below to shave with a vicious squall imminent? Lots of un-seamanlike activity in this film (maybe some between the lines message here?). The worst for me was learning that they destroyed 3 good Cal cruising boats making this. Why?

(clipped some nonsense meant to make us believe Bob23 reads, you know, literature)    . Can someone help me with my problem????? :(

We're here to help Bob23.

You must stand on your head while drinking a beer from a long neck bottle. You may choose your flavor of beer but it must be from a long neck ... and on your head, don't forgit. This followed by doing the hokey poky and singing "I'm So Pretty".

no wait that cures something else

No, yeah, do it anyway..... it'll work, sure.

Mel:
I tried taking your advice and almost drowned in my Guiness! The Hokey Pokey part went well but when my wife caught me singing "I'm so pretty", she called the nice young men in thier clean white coats and....they're coming to take me away, haha! Sounds like I'll have plenty of time to read those old Messing About issues.

The movie was just a bit unbelievable and I hope Robert Redford wasn't paid too much- he only had one line to memorize! And even my non-sailing wife caught this one: Why would you tether your life raft to a sinking vessel? Hmm....
Still, it had some great cinematic moments. (Is that a word?) But hard to believe it's up for Best Picture.

My wife and friends nick named me "Old Man" because I always talk of the old days..... and I am 32.

I was forced to watch some American Idol....... "Quality time with the wife" my wife says....Please God let spring get here................

OMG...American Idol. My favorite show...yeah, believe that and I have a bridge to sell you. If there is one repulsive show (and there are many) it's AI. Note: If your an Idol fan, don't take this as a personal attack; just my constitutionally protected right to free speech. The Admiral watches it and for some reason, does not appreciate my comments.
Back to the movie: I did like the part where he realized that maybe setting fire to his life raft might've been a bad idea. The look on Redfords face was priceless.

While they don't come outright and say it, the fire is what saved him.  The point being when all is lost, scorched raft (earth) policy is best.  He was doing the "titanic" scene & noticed the launch approaching his burning ring of fire.  He's going down, down, down no, wait a lifeboat? Swim you B@$t#rd, Swim

I'm glad they ended the movie there, I couldn't have tolerated the dialog after being saved.
