Chesapeake Bay Mid Summer Gathering, CBMSG
« on: June 19, 2016, 07:03:03 AM »
Well it is hard to believe it has been over 6 months since we met for the CBMWG at Dockside in Colonial Beach and there has been some discussion in the "Why I am selling a boat i love for a woman i love more" section that led to folks saying it's time again!

Just as in winter, thought the gathering might be a landlubbers type (we use cars!) since many folks are already gearing up for CLR, BBB, etc, and many drove a good distance to attend. We kicked around a couple potential dates and August 7th, a Sunday, lunch/brunch kinda emerged as a possible. I threw out there the location of Willaby's in White Stone as a potential place. It is at the southern side of the Northern Neck (kinda helps those yankees feel more at home if we keep it with northern in the name somehow!) I'm totally open to other suggestions as well, but figured got start somewhere! Huge beer list Bob.

The menu for Sunday is a brunch. We are also totally open to another day and/or time. We are also open to hosting the gathering at our little marina and we all do the ole cook out thing with folks bringing items. This marina is more like a park than a marina, seriously we thought we had made a wrong turn first time in, looked like a National Park! Just across and down the "Rivah" from Willaby's.

Anyway, i agree with Bob, let's make this happen all. Susan and Becky were the sole representatives from the feminine side last gathering so let's get those first mates on board as well! Susan is up for it again. Also it is OK TO DRINK THE LAST BEER!

SO WHAT SAY YE?!

I like it!!! Either place is fine although the cook out at the marina sounds like fun! I'll bring the guideboat "Straggler" just in case anyone wants to row. I'm excited to see this develop!

ps: That is one great beer list at Willabys!!!

Well if we do it at the marina, we can maybe get Peter to bring that new tug over or at least his launch. We got a sailing dinghy as well and it's got some oars. The marina has assorted sit upon kayaks and a canoe or two. Heck we could row over to Merrior for their extensive beer list after cookout. It's just across the creek, but we might also just settle in to being stationary!

The beer list at Willaby's is pretty good though ain't it!

Either works, but the idea of a cookout might just be the ticket.

Weigh in there Heave, Tim has threatened to come. We can literally kidnap Peter. Bob, u gonna hijack Kevin?

It looks like there is a launch ramp in the picture.  Might a 55 mph CP16 make the trip a day or two early and overnight on board?

I have been trying to get to a salt water event.  This might just get the scratches on my trailer to start rusting . . .

The ramp is not a public ramp but since we are slip(s) holders there maybe it could work. Certainly there is transient dockage available and if a regular slip is open they have been known to let that be the transient dockage as well. There is a public ramp nearby not sure of what it is since have never seen it. Will check on both scenarios for ya. Summer can be warm at times here and i don't know your location, so not sure what you are used to. The grounds and facilities are like a National Park but also has a full service boatyard there. Great sailing grounds for a 16. The water, though brackish, is well upstream on a large river so those scratches will only rust slowly!

You know you just skip all the hauling her her and simply buy No Mas and stay aboard her and either leave her in her slip or haul her home! Jus sayin!

As of right now I am scheduled to work on August 7.  August may be a crazy month because I am teaching a class at a Regional Criminal Justice Academy on August 15-19.  I also teach another class on July 27-29.  On top of that there is blackout week at work from August 22-29 where no one can take leave.

I am not sure about this one.

Hey Heave, don't what ya to miss it. You working the day before August 6? The goal is to get folks together and the day picked to work. No day will work for everyone but no reason not to try! The class sounds interesting, whose your audience?

If I work a weekend I work the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  If I am off I am off for those three days.  It is an interesting schedule...12 hours.  On two, off two, on three, off two, on two, off three, and then repeat.

The nice thing about this epic event is that we can make the date work for all of us. Let's do it...let's pick a date that works for all of us. We can do this.

We can make that weekend work as well. Is that getting too close to BBB Bob or would that just help prime the pump!? You gunna round up Kevin? I will be working on Peter but you are welcome to as well.

Heave, you off that weekend?

Citroen/Dave, sure we can figure a way to get that 16 in the water. The shoal draft of No Mas allows her to get into some cool spots the big ole boys cannot. The 16 has even 9 less inches.

Alright the rest of you Compacteers out there that don't understand the "epicness" of this crowd should go back and reread the CBMWG thread so you fully understand the dubious sanity of this gathering. I know there are more of you out there!

I think that I am off that weekend.  I am off every other weekend, for the most part.

Well we are getting there. Looks like Heave can do, Bob23 can do, Tim can do, We can do, PeterG is gunna (he just doesn't know it yet!), We need to hear from Kevin, Citroen/Dave you gotta rust those scratches sooner or later, and the August 13 date is looking like a go! Time to get some other Compacteers to join so that the stories can be far and ranging.

Also hearing a cookout at out little marina is the preference for a summer gathering. We are going to have at least a few rowing craft and sit upon kayaks, and a couple canoes for exploring Parrot Island and the area at he mouth of Locklies. If Dave brings his 16 he will be the yacht in the crowd!

I will verify that the ramp can be used if needed and will make sure the nice pavilions are available. Stay tuned about particulars but his is looking like a go. Scroll back up to check out the Regent Point Marina and location. We are about three hours from there and find it one of the closest and most convenient of the bay locations, for us anyway.

SO MARK THE CALENDARS AND LETS ROUND UP SOME MORE!

No Mas,

After sailing with Tim Gardner on his CP19 I could easily develop 3 footitis but age and resources have me pretty well pegged to a very mobile CP16.  Thanks for you comments about a swap up to a 23d.

Seeing that the CBMSG event is more social than sailing, I may talk to Tim about sharing a ride, sporting two kayaks on the roof.  My second homemade boat just got reskinned after 50 some years; the original military surplus skin was Kevlar raincoat material. It lasted 40 some years with no damage even after being parked on oyster shells and being slammed into rocks.  I placed third in the International Whitewater Race on the Potomac River as a junior in high school in that super lightweight kayak.  This event may be the place for the re launch.

I wish we could travel with my "new" slightly illegal 1990 Citroen XM V6 24v.  147mph top cruising speed at 34 mpg, ride compared to a Rolls Royce. . .  It is in need of an engine ECU available only to European sales.  Another challenge to keep age at bay.
